Dairy: Slurry separation and biofibre improved herd health and daily operations
At a farm in Tjørring, switching to slurry separation and biofibre bedding in the cubicles has reduced leg problems and eliminated the need to purchase bedding material. A stable and cost-effective solution in daily operations.
Slurry separation has been a worthwhile investment
Back in 2015, it was time to replace the mattresses in the cubicles for the 200 dairy cows at Peder Kristensen’s farm in Tjørring.
"I considered whether we should try something different. I looked into the various options, such as sand, but ultimately chose biofibre."
Farmer Peder Kristensen.
The change required minor modifications to the barn to ensure optimal filling of the cubicles, but the investment has proven worthwhile.
“We have built good cubicles, and I experience that the cows no longer develop leg problems now that we use biofibre as bedding. It results in healthier cows. The surface is also very non-slip, so they no longer slip in the cubicles,” says Peder.
He explains that using biofibre requires new routines in the barn.
“We add bedding every day. It needs to be applied in small layers continuously, and we rake it daily as well. This prevents heat build-up and bacterial growth, helping us avoid mastitis. I was slightly concerned about that when we switched to biofibre, but it is actually at the same level as when we used mattresses,” Peder explains.
The right choice
At the farm in Tjørring, they are very satisfied with the decision to use biofibre, and Peder is convinced it works best for his operation.
“If someone asks whether I would try sand in the cubicles, I say no thank you. With biofibre, I avoid getting sand into the slurry system,” he emphasises.
Peder Kristensen also highlights another advantage of slurry separation and using biofibre in the cubicles:
“I no longer need to purchase bedding material, so the investment is worth it,” says Peder Kristensen from Tjørring.
