Pigs: Slurry separation simplified handling and saved time

At a pig farm on Bornholm, slurry separation made it possible to deliver the solid fraction to a biogas plant and apply the liquid fraction directly to the fields. This resulted in a more efficient workflow and improved nutrient utilisation.

Slurry separation saved time for the pig producer

On the island of Bornholm, Flemming Jensen has been a pig producer for many years. At his farm, they chose to separate the slurry and had the opportunity to supply the solid fraction to a biogas plant.

"We had a slurry lagoon where we did not want the solid fraction, so it was a good solution for us to deliver it to biogas."
Flemming Jensen

Once the solid fraction is separated from the liquid fraction, slurry handling becomes much easier.

"The liquid fraction is ready to be applied directly to the fields. So you eliminate one process — and time is money."

Faster absorption in the soil

Slurry separation saves valuable time, and the liquid fraction is easy to spread once it is applied to the fields.

"It is thinner than untreated slurry, so it infiltrates the soil more easily. Ammonium is volatile, so it is a significant advantage that it reaches the soil more quickly."
Flemming Jensen

Today, Flemming Jensen has sold the livestock part of the farm and focuses exclusively on crop production.
