Unique pump solution for handling fish silage
A specially developed pump and control solution installed onboard a cargo vessel transporting fish silage between Danish ports and Norwegian fish farms. The solution ensures stable operation, automated control and an improved working environment at sea.
Fish silage for biogas processing
Thanks to a collaboration with Kynde & Toft as project managers, VestEL responsible for electrical installation and software development, and Højgaards as pump supplier, a complete pumping and control system is now operating in shuttle service between the Danish ports of Hirtshals, Thyborøn and Hanstholm and Norwegian waters.
The destination in Norway is fish farms, where dead fish are processed into silage. The silage is pumped onboard the vessel and transported back to Danish ports, where it is discharged into containers for further processing in biogas plants.
The unloading contract for fish silage is unlimited in scope, which makes strong, reliable and durable onboard solutions essential.
Optimal control
With one pump installed per cargo hold, a well-organised working environment has been created onboard, minimising heavy lifting and manual processes. The system is complemented by a highly automated electrical control system developed by VestEL, providing clear and simple control of the pumps and the transfer of liquid between compartments through the central piping system.
Tank levels are monitored directly from the ship’s bridge, ensuring full operational overview at all times.
In every respect, the pumps have been integrated into a unique solution. They are mounted to withstand harsh weather and marine conditions, are easy to service and maintain, and support a safer and more efficient working environment — while reliably transferring the liquid both at sea and on land.
We look forward to following the pumps in operation at sea and the results they contribute to onshore.
